FAQ

Frequently asked questions about fencing and our club. If your question is not answered here, don't hesitate to contact us!

What is the minimum/maximum age to start fencing?

We welcome fencers of all ages! The minimum age to start fencing is 14 years. There is no maximum age — fencing can be practised by people of all ages. Young or old, everyone is welcome to join and have fun!

What if I am not fit enough to start fencing?

Don't worry! Fencing is a sport you can start at any fitness level. There are also many ways to beat your opponent beyond fitness: tactical thinking, technique and cunning are all routes to victory.

Where and when do the lessons take place?

Lessons and training sessions take place in the upper hall of sports centre Drie Hofsteden, Renaat de Rudderlaan, 8500 Kortrijk — on Mondays from 19:00 to 21:30 and on Wednesdays from 20:00 to 22:00. No prior experience required!

What should I bring to my first fencing lesson?

For your first fencing lesson you only need comfortable sportswear and sports shoes with a non-marking sole. We provide all the fencing equipment such as the mask, jacket, and weapons. A water bottle and a towel are always handy.

How much is the membership fee?

The membership fee is €350 per year for adults (18+), €250 for teens (15–18) and €225 for youth (9–14). The fee includes a club contribution, a licence with the Flemish Fencing Federation, insurance, and use of the piste equipment.

Is fencing an expensive sport?

Fencing may seem like an investment at first, but it need not be expensive. At our club you can use club equipment until you have your own. Once purchased, your equipment can last for years with proper care. Repairs are also available at the club.

What equipment do I need?

If you decide fencing is for you, you will need to purchase your own épée (~€95), a body wire (~€25) and a glove (~€25). During the first year of membership you can use a club mask and jacket; after that it is best to purchase your own as soon as possible.

What if I am left-handed?

No problem! Fencing is suitable for both right- and left-handed people. Our trainers have experience teaching both and adapt their lessons accordingly. We have sufficient equipment available for left-handed fencers.

Can I take part in competitions?

Yes, definitely! Once you have mastered the basics, you can take part in competitions at your level. Talk to the fencing master first so he can help you prepare and guide you through competitions. We also organise various internal club competitions where you can gain experience.

What is épée fencing?

Épée fencing is one of the three fencing disciplines, alongside foil and sabre. The épée is a thrusting weapon and the classic duelling weapon. In épée the entire body counts as a valid target, making it a tactical sport where you must try to hit your opponent without being hit yourself. It requires both physical and mental skills.

Can I also learn foil or sabre fencing?

We currently focus exclusively on épée fencing. However, if you are interested in foil or sabre, please do not hesitate to contact us — we can put you in touch with other clubs that offer these disciplines.
